Getting Online, Email, and Documents

This 60-minute, hands-on class is the first step for anyone who has never used a computer or feels unsure around one. Students will leave knowing the basic parts of a computer, how to turn it on and log in, how to use a mouse and keyboard, how to open a web browser and search the internet, and how to spot common online scams.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this class, students will be able to: 

• Identify the basic parts of a computer: monitor, keyboard, mouse or trackpad, and the computer itself • Turn a computer on, log in, and shut it down safely • Use a mouse or trackpad to click, double-click, right-click, and scroll • Type simple text and correct mistakes using the keyboard • Open a web browser, visit a website, and run a basic internet search • Explain what email is and recognize at least two warning signs of an online scam

Materials Needed

• A desktop, laptop, or tablet with internet access (provided in-room, or bring your own) • Reading glasses or other visual aids, if used • Printed handout (provided) and a pen for notes

A Guide to Artificial Intelligence Successful Prompting

This 60-minute, hands-on class teaches students how to create  AI prompts  and learn to utilize tools like Open AI-ChatGPT, Google-Gemini, and Anthropic-Claude to save time, obtain better answers online, and simplify everyday tasks.  

By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 

• Explain, in plain language, what AI and Claude are (and are not). • Access Claude on a web browser, phone, or tablet independently. • Type a clear, effective question or request (a "prompt") to AI.

• Identify at least three everyday tasks AI can help with. • Apply basic online-safety habits when chatting with any AI tool. • Know where to go for continued practice and support after class.

Spotting Scams, Phishing & Vishing

This 60-minute, hands-on class teaches students how to recognize the warning signs of scams that arrive by email (phishing), text message (smishing), and phone call (vishing). 

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

 • Explain, in plain language, what phishing, smishing, and vishing are

• Identify common red flags in suspicious emails, texts, and phone calls

• Recognize that caller ID and sender names can be faked ("spoofed") • Describe the safe steps to take when something feels suspicious: pause, don't click or pay, verify independently, tell someone, report it

• Know where to report a suspected scam

• A laptop, desktop, tablet, or smartphone with internet access (optional but helpful)

• Printed handout (provided) and a pen for notes • Optional: a real (but safe to share) example of a suspicious email or text a student has received

Enhance Your Smartphone skills

Class Overview

This course is where everyone starts. Learners get comfortable holding and navigating their phone, making calls, sending texts, and understanding what apps are — the foundation every later class builds on. Each session mixes short, plain-language demonstrations with guided hands-on practice, so learners leave every class able to do something new on their own device.

Learning Objectives (Introduction)

✓Turn on, unlock, and navigate a smartphone using basic touch gestures

✓Make a call, save a contact, and check voicemail

✓Type and send a text message with confidence

✓Understand what apps are, open and switch between them, and find Settings

Learning Objectives (Intermediate)

By the end of the series, learners will be able to:

✓ Understand the difference between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and connect to a network

✓ Find, install, update, and remove apps with confidence

✓ Take, organize, and share photos from the phone's camera and gallery

✓ Use a web browser to search safely and recognize common scams

Learning Objectives (Advance)

✓Back up a phone to the cloud and keep it updated

✓Turn on Two-Factor Authentication and review app permissions

✓Recognize and avoid scams, phishing, and fraud attempts

✓ Use a voice assistant, make video calls, and set up a mobile payment method

Leap Up Your Smartphone Skills

Class Overview

The Savvy Senior Smartphone Series picks up where our Intro and Intermediate classes leave off. Learners take control of their phone’s settings, browse the web safely, manage files, store and share documents in the cloud with Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive, back up their entire phone, protect their phone number from today’s SIM swap scams, download apps safely while keeping subscriptions under control, and get the most from iCloud on iPhone and iPad. Each session mixes short, plain-language demonstrations with guided practice on the learner’s own phone, so everyone leaves every class able to do something new — and to do it safely.

Learning Objectives (Savvy)

By the end of the series, learners will be able to:

✓ Find any setting quickly and adjust text size, notifications, and app permissions to fit their needs

✓ Browse the web with tabs and bookmarks, use private browsing, and recognize and close scam pop-ups

✓ Download,find, organize, and clean up files using the Files app and phone storage settings

✓ Save, back up, and share files and photos with Microsoft OneDrive

✓ Store, scan, and share documents with Google Drive while keeping personal papers private

✓ Back up their whole phone, check that the backup worked, and restore it onto a new phone

✓ Protect their phone number from SIM swap scams with a SIM PIN, carrier locks, and safer sign-in codes

✓ Choose trustworthy apps, control purchases and subscriptions, and request refunds in the App Store and Google Play

✓ Use iCloud on iPhone and iPad to keep photos and files safe, find a lost device, and protect their Apple Account  

✓ Archive important files, texts, and calls to the Cloud or Drive to save for later
